Milwaukee is known for its many local burger joints and we’ve ranked some that we really like. Maybe we missed a good one! Make sure to let us know your favorite Milwaukee area burger joint by sending us an email or reaching out on facebook!

10th: Milk Can – Muskego

Newly established in 2020, Milk Can serves up delicious burgers and other hot sandwiches alongside fresh frozen custard. They pay close attention to detail, and their food is easily the most Instagram-picturesque of all the locations on this list. The restaurant features standard indoor seating and outdoor seating.

9th: Big Deal Burgers and Custard – West Allis

Big Deal Burgers has been serving 100% Angus beef burgers and fresh frozen custard since 2013. They boast a large menu with a variety of options ranging from chicken sandwiches to gyros, soups, and salads, and have become a beloved staple in the West Allis community. They offer a large amount of indoor and outdoor seating.

8th: Kraverz Frozen Custard – Menomonee Falls

Kraverz is an excellent choice if you are in the Menomonee Falls area. They make a variety of delicious burgers and other great options with crinkle-cut fries. Their shakes are fantastic additions to any meal, and they also produce small batches of custard daily. They offer typical seating both inside and outside.

7th: Gilles Frozen Custard - Milwaukee

Founded in 1938, this drive-up burger joint has been serving up delicious burgers and custard for over 85 years. Their burgers and custard are a well-known Milwaukee staple. This establishment offers limited indoor seating and some outdoor seating.

6th: Murf’s Frozen Custard & Jumbo Burgers – Brookfield

An excellent local burger and custard joint with two locations, Murf’s has been in business since 1993 and serves a variety of burgers, hot sandwiches, and great sides like shoestring fries, chive fries, and onion rings. They offer typical seating both inside and outside.

5th: The Hamburger Haus – Campbellsport

If you find yourself in the Campbellsport/Dundee area, Hamburger Haus is a must-stop. This outdoor-only restaurant makes a wide variety of burgers and hot sandwiches and offers hand-scooped ice cream. They are only open in the summer months, which makes it an excellent choice for rustic road motorcycle riders and families alike. They offer picnic table seating in the beautiful Kettle Moraine area.

4th: Gus’s Drive-In – East Troy

Get sent back to the 1950s at Gus’s Drive-In. This restaurant produces delicious food and frozen custard with a throwback vibe that is sure to be a hit with any family. They host a cruise night every few weeks, so make sure to check out their event calendar! A good amount of seating is available inside, with covered seating outside.

3rd Choice: Oscar’s Frozen Custard – West Allis / Franklin / Maybe Waukesha

We love Oscar’s because their custard recipe rivals all others. It seems to be served just above freezing, which makes it soft and smooth—even silky-smooth, one might say. Their burgers have a broiled flavor, and they serve a wide variety of other delicious options, ranging from soups and salads to fish baskets, which makes Oscar’s a well-rounded choice for any family. Oscar’s has excellent seating options at all of their locations, except their Waukesha location, which burned down last year.

2nd Choice: Kopp’s Frozen Custard – Brookfield / Glendale / Greenfield

Possibly one of the best-known Milwaukee staples, Kopp’s has been a crowd-pleaser since it was founded in 1950 by Elsa Kopp, whose photo you can see in the kitchen of each Kopp’s location. Kopp’s burgers are unparalleled, and their custard sets the highest bar for any Milwaukee-area custard restaurant. The Brookfield location has inside and outside seating. The Greenfield location features standing tables inside and an outside patio with a giant waterfall. The Glendale location was the inspiration for the design of Arnold’s Drive-In on the show Happy Days and features standing tables and a small outdoor seating patio.

1st Choice: Noble Brothers Waterford Creamery – Waterford

Possibly the least known on the list, Noble Brothers takes first place for a variety of reasons. This drive-up, outdoor restaurant is open year-round. Their burgers are unparalleled—each patty seared to perfection. They make their own cheese, custard, ice cream, and homemade ketchup. Their soft drinks are locally sourced, and they fry all of their deep fried items in beef tallow. If you are anywhere within 45 minutes of this place, this burger joint is worth the drive! Their location features outdoor picnic areas and very limited indoor seating at the creamery.
